Like AI models, our biological neural networks require constant fine-tuning.
I recently read a piece about a 30-day "ChatGPT Detox," and the results were terrifying.
When the author quit using AI writing tools, they didn't suddenly lose their intelligence. Instead, they realized they had completely lost their tolerance for cognitive friction. The moment a thought became difficult to articulate, their instinct was to reach for the AI escape hatch.
The Loss of "Backpropagation"
In machine learning, models improve through the struggle of calculating errors and updating weights. For humans, that process is wrestling with a messy first draft or a complex problem. When we skip the struggle, our synaptic connections don't strengthen. The pathways for deep focus and original problem-solving begin to decay.
Overfitting to Convenience
AI models can overfit to training data and fail to adapt. Similarly, when we rely on instant AI answers, our brains overfit to convenience. We train ourselves to expect immediate dopamine hits and lose our ability to sit with ambiguity.
Continuous Fine-Tuning is Mandatory
When the author pushed through the 30-day detox, their mental stamina returned. Ideas formed faster. Conversations felt sharper. By removing the shortcut, they re-engaged their neuroplasticity and started fine-tuning their own model once more.
Sit with the blank page for ten minutes before asking an AI for an outline. The human brain is the most advanced neural network we will ever own — don't let its weights decay just to save a few minutes.
